What is Montessori for the 6-9 year-old?
The Great Stories (Cosmic Education)
In Montessori education, Cycle 2 is for children aged 6 to 9 years and represents an important phase in their learning journey. This cycle is part of the broader Montessori framework, which typically organises education into three-year age groupings.
During Cycle 2, the curriculum introduces children to Cosmic Education, which provides them with a broad understanding of the world. Subjects like history, geography, science, and culture are explored, helping children see the interconnectedness of everything and fostering a sense of wonder about the universe.
This stage also emphasises independence and responsibility. Children are given more freedom to choose their work and are encouraged to take ownership of their learning. This independence helps develop self-discipline, time management, and a genuine love of learning.
As children progress through Cycle 2, they start to develop abstract thinking. Montessori materials are specifically designed to support this transition, allowing children to explore concepts hands-on before moving to more abstract representations. Social development also becomes more significant, with children often engaging in collaborative learning. They work in groups, collaborate on projects, and learn to negotiate and work effectively with others.
The curriculum continues to build on language and mathematics skills, with a focus on grammar, reading, writing, and more advanced mathematical concepts. Overall, Cycle 2 is designed to nurture intellectual curiosity, social skills, and the growing ability to think critically and independently.
